April Summary

Maurice Renck

Time flies by. April is nearly over, and before we're getting ready for May, let's look back and the past weeks. Here's our monthly review.

Sociabli

We already mentioned it in our last review: we were workin on a new approach for connecting services to Sociabli.

In the past we had issues with Mastodon. Because there are so many variations and forks out there, we could not rely on available feeds or JSON endpoints. So we decided to change how we handle Mastodon completely.

Sociabli now is a Mastodon app. Users don't have to hand in their information to us or even need to create an app token. With a simple click they can authorize our app to read and write posts for the user. This way we can use the Mastodon API to read the status of a user – and later also post to Mastodon when we provide more flows.

Because this approach is very different to the one we had before, we had to restructure a lot of our code and introduced a new way to connect services: Connections. Currently a connection can be a Mastodon or Bluesky account. And here comes the first big difference! You can connect as many different accounts as you like, select your flow and cross post from one account to another, or from two different Mastodon accounts to one Bluesky account. It's a great improvement!

Because we're now an app and because we other options to access data our system works way more stable and relyable. So even if users only connect two accounts, they benefit from those changes.

Server Side Stories

Of course we published two new episodes of our Podcast "Server Side Stories" this month. This time we talked about:

Again those episodes are in German only.

What we read

Still not enough input? Here are some recommendations out of all the things we read last month:

The core message is that most people don’t take a side (for or against), but primarily think about themselves. Therefore, you shouldn't try to please everyone,
but simply be yourself.
